Fashion PR Do's and DOnt's

1. Don’t Mass Pitch
There is nothing that wastes a reporters time more (and on their bad side faster) than mass emails to all the reporters on your contact list regardless of whether the topic is relevant to what they write about or not. A personalized email may take more of your time but it really goes a long way to getting people to pay attention to your name. While each message does not have to be completely different, it should at least contain the person’s name to which you are mailing as well as at least one customized sentence explaining why your pitch is relevant to their readership.
2. Don’t send untargeted pitches
Your favorite magazine may be GQ but that doesn’t mean you should pitch the editor your collection of women’s shoes unless you are pitching to the stylist for an upcoming photo-shoot involving women. Be realistic and do your research. Know the target demographic for the magazines you are pitching to and be sure that your line fits within that demographic.
3. Don’t Respond on Your Own Time
Reporters often have very short deadlines, that is why it is called “the News.” If you don’t think you will be able to turn something around quickly make sure you inform the reporter right away and don’t take a long time to respond because you don’t have something to say. If you can’t make it on their deadline respond to them as soon as possible letting them know. If you are working on an article or answering interview questions a brief email to let them know that you are working on them will go a long way in building a relationship with the reporter.
4. Don’t Fib
If you don’t know something, never resort to making up facts. Reporters are taught to fact check and do background research on the subject matter so making up information will not only ruin your credibility but may also embarrass you…as it should.
5. Don’t Overwrite
Sending pitches that are pages long beyond what they need to be is a sure way to get ignored by reporters. Put the most important content in the first paragraph of the email or even better; keep the email to only one paragraph. Do not make a press release longer than a page and a half, for the best results keep it limited to one page.
6. Don’t Be Trite
While I should not have to ever say this, unfortunately I do. Think outside the box. Fashion should be full of original ideas and ground-breaking creative direction. While the adage, “No plot is new” comes to mind, I beg to disagree. Do not aspire to be the next Coco Chanel; aspire to be the first you. Inspiration is fine, but there is no excuse for confidence in your own creation and the audacity to take risks.
7. Don’t Be Negative
Never speak poorly about another line, a photographer you have worked with, or, frankly anyone whatsoever. While it is bad business etiquette to knock someone, it also demonstrates a complete lack of class. Be wary of small talk with media personnel containing such statements or they could very well be the news you didn’t want published. If you have a controversial statement to make with your ad campaign or line, stand behind it, but acknowledge that for everything there are consequences.

WHY Are Print Publications FADING TO BLACK

I have been in a very sad, drought in regards to some of my top media outlets being dismissed...well need i dare say it..going under ..Vibe Magazine which is the all time fav for urban news music and fashion! In addition to KING Magazine going under which I have had the pleasure of building a relationship with from pitching my client rapper Trina several cover stories! I cant help but wonder why is this happening to the declining rate of urban print publications.....not only were these timeless publications our markets gateway to current events and colorful images..VIBE Magazine was everything to a urban music publicist to score a client that cover was "once upon a time" GOLD!!!

I knew something just wasent right when I would phone in vibe to pitch clients or better yet extend an invitation to an event i was working that I JUST know they would usually like to cover! But never in my worst nightmare would i imagine they would be the latest target to the media recession

Vibe enjoyed significant success in the late '90s and early part of this decade as hip hop and R&B became the nation's predominant forms of pop music. But in recent years the title has fallen on hard times under its new owner, the Wicks Group, which bought it in 2006. In February, it reduced its circulation and publishing frequency, cut salaries and moved employees to a four-day workweek to save money.

Anywho it would be cool, to not give a fitting goodbye to VIBE or KING so RIP!!!

Dont let your publicist tell you LOOKS dont matter ..they do..people

Do looks matter in publicity? Absolutely they do. The American public and the media are visually oriented. If you think only models have to look hot, you are in for a big surprise. Stars need to look like stars. Fitness experts better look fit. Music artists better have plenty of sex appeal along with great talent. Money gurus better look successful, etc. When doing your web site photos, author bio photos or any promotional material -- be sure to look the part. Usually, this requires some expert guidance from an experienced national publicist, makeover artist and a top photographer. Don't make the mistake of just doing generic head shots. They won't take you where you want to go. In fact, it is often the photo that first gets the attention of media decision makers. It has to communicate the right image, and intrigue the producer or editor in a split second. Underestimating the power and importance of your look can cost you valuable media opportunities. Spend the time and money to get it right. Are you ready for your close-up?

Publicist Advise ( Five Quick Tips)

1. Always BE Very Nice and Professional to all your media outlets

2. Never rush a priority Media Outlet off the phone

3. Never Leave your media thirty on the red carpet

4. NEVER NEVER Get caught in a lie

5. Always keep client pitches to a minimum when talking to the press dont want to overwhelm them

I CANT HEAR YOu MY SHOES...ARE MAKING TO MUCH NOISE

DONT PUT YOUR LIFE IN "Layaway"

SO I was up at the coffee shop across the street from my condo doing my usual Tuesday thing! Which consist of media monitoring, conference calls, emails, emails and more emails...and scheduling client interviews..when I realized...I should add a additional hour of work to my schedule everyday to assist me with getting where I need to be by 25! I decided to share with you all the term " DONT PUT YOUR LIFE ON LAYAWAY" which means toying around, with your life on a daily bases..telling your self were you are going to be within months or years..or how great these ideas are in your head..the world and everyone in it is at our disposal..USE THEM! DONT WAKE UP 1o years from now, saying the traditional shoulda, coulda , woulda...when ur life is basically over in a a nut shell...try very hard to do everything in your power to d what you love, and aspire to BE!

Cuz Layaway is so PLAYED Out and usually when you get the items out,.they are out of season or just not as cute as you thought they were!! lol

PS

Youre only as COOL as you BELIEVE YOu Are

PUBLICIST SPOTLIGHT "YVETTE NOEL-SCHURE: Tales of a Super-Publicist"

A former editor for 'Black Beat' magazine, she has worked at the Sony record label for close to 15 years. From forgotten artists such as Puff Johnson and Kenny Lattimore to superstars like Mariah Carey and Ricky Martin, the Grenada native help engineer effective media strategies throughout the years. Her piece de resistance, though, was building a media profile for a then-unkown Destiny's Child -- the young, burgeoning quartet from Houston and helping them become international superstars.
Since then, Noel-Schure's tailor-made stamp is evident on proven artists such as John Legend and Kelly Rowland.

She currently is best known for her fab works with BEYONCE!

PR DIVA APPROVED!

So this weekend, myself and some co workers and the twins from Jagged Edge (which are currently signed to Slip n Slide Records) attended the Ed Hardy fashion show! It was fab! Although it was only there swim suit line, it was totally MIAMI appropriate with the bright colors and bangin beach bodies! After the show, we went back stage and everyone did some press and did your usual "networking" and then I ate dinner at one of the cutest places in the world!! I Had sushi and sake! On top of the "complimentary French Martini's they had at the show! After dinner I met back up with the twins and we all rode over to the after party! ALL in ALL it was a great Sat night! Just what I needed cocktails, good food and laughs !! after seeing the pr staff for the show, I am so intrigued on doing pr for a fashion event in the very near future!

In the GReat Words Of Kanye West...I don't care what none of ya'll say I still love her... "AMBER ROSE SO WRONG SHE's RIGHT

I aint saying she no GOLD Digger...but she aint messin with NO Broke Nigga's!! Let alone broke niggas NEW SOCIALITE/MODEL..AMber ROse...isent messin with bad/broke clothes either...she is HOT..and I dont care who likes it or not! No I am not saying i understand the sudden phenomena over this young "FOX" however she does have it going on! I had a chance to meet her at the BET Awards this year! She is such a nice person!! Both her and Kanye spoke and held convo's in the media room! very cool! Her style is most def reminisce of nothing new and all todays trends worn by everyone IN MY OPINION..yet in still you have to give home girl her credit!

Sure she 's catching a little heat from the "bloggers" but hey who dosent have a past..and i just want you to know Amber I dont care..i love you anyway....blue hair and all!!!

Amber Rose is SO WRONG SHE's RIGHT

BET Awards 2009 ..............I;m going going back back to cali cali

I know I am late, but this year I accompanied one of my personal fav clients to the BET Awards, i loved the hotel...it was fab! And made wonderful cocktails which I indulged in a few nights...When i first arrived in LA I stayed at Slip N Slide's new recording artist Drew Sidora's house you all may know her as the character on CW's very popular show the game! She has also played in various tv shows as well! Anywho...I actually enjoyed the awards this year, although myself and my client arrived a tad bit late....( side eye) we still enjoyed ourselves and took full advantage of the backstage media room! Trina looked wonderful, bare makeup, bare hair and a wonderful dress...she truly looked like a gem!!

We did however sneak on the red carpet at the very end , behind kanye so she could take a few good photo opp's on the carpet itself!

I actually enjoy the red carpet at these events, i take these opportunities to see who's representing who??Who fired there publicist as of last year and who hired new material...lol..

The red carpet at these awards are extremely extensive and hold a media line up of at least 100 outlets....finding the "priority"press for your client can be a little overwhelming at the awards ..but somehow "use" publicist make it work!

During my down time in the market I attended "Pleasure P's House PARTY" in the Hills and it was something to witness...fun, food, and more sights to see, ran into some peoples i havent seen in a while, like publicist Chantel and one of my fav idols...Valeshia bitterfield...( love her)

On a side note, I love LA....I love the food and the entire VIBE I get from this city....I ate great food while I was there and met the nicest people this world could possible offer...i attending some great gifting suites which are always my personal favs!!! We had a lack of drivers to assist our team that was out in the LA market for that week, however we MADE It WORK...

I also met two NY based stylist...and fell in actual love with electric blue eye liner

AT on "gifting suite"in particular sponsored by The Source Magazine they had the greatest.....wheat grass martini's...yes I said it a wheat grass martini's it was to DIE for!

The give away bags..had some random yet rather useful items in them!,,,by the way i wore the cutest miss sixty boots to the gifting suite and they were a HUGE success

ALL in ALL LA /BET AWARDS Trip Was Great and I cant wait to go back for business or pleasure...wink wink
