1. Don’t Mass Pitch
There is nothing that wastes a reporters time more (and on their bad side faster) than mass emails to all the reporters on your contact list regardless of whether the topic is relevant to what they write about or not. A personalized email may take more of your time but it really goes a long way to getting people to pay attention to your name. While each message does not have to be completely different, it should at least contain the person’s name to which you are mailing as well as at least one customized sentence explaining why your pitch is relevant to their readership.
2. Don’t send untargeted pitches
Your favorite magazine may be GQ but that doesn’t mean you should pitch the editor your collection of women’s shoes unless you are pitching to the stylist for an upcoming photo-shoot involving women. Be realistic and do your research. Know the target demographic for the magazines you are pitching to and be sure that your line fits within that demographic.
3. Don’t Respond on Your Own Time
Reporters often have very short deadlines, that is why it is called “the News.” If you don’t think you will be able to turn something around quickly make sure you inform the reporter right away and don’t take a long time to respond because you don’t have something to say. If you can’t make it on their deadline respond to them as soon as possible letting them know. If you are working on an article or answering interview questions a brief email to let them know that you are working on them will go a long way in building a relationship with the reporter.
4. Don’t Fib
If you don’t know something, never resort to making up facts. Reporters are taught to fact check and do background research on the subject matter so making up information will not only ruin your credibility but may also embarrass you…as it should.
5. Don’t Overwrite
Sending pitches that are pages long beyond what they need to be is a sure way to get ignored by reporters. Put the most important content in the first paragraph of the email or even better; keep the email to only one paragraph. Do not make a press release longer than a page and a half, for the best results keep it limited to one page.
6. Don’t Be Trite
While I should not have to ever say this, unfortunately I do. Think outside the box. Fashion should be full of original ideas and ground-breaking creative direction. While the adage, “No plot is new” comes to mind, I beg to disagree. Do not aspire to be the next Coco Chanel; aspire to be the first you. Inspiration is fine, but there is no excuse for confidence in your own creation and the audacity to take risks.
7. Don’t Be Negative
Never speak poorly about another line, a photographer you have worked with, or, frankly anyone whatsoever. While it is bad business etiquette to knock someone, it also demonstrates a complete lack of class. Be wary of small talk with media personnel containing such statements or they could very well be the news you didn’t want published. If you have a controversial statement to make with your ad campaign or line, stand behind it, but acknowledge that for everything there are consequences.

WHY Are Print Publications FADING TO BLACK

I have been in a very sad, drought in regards to some of my top media outlets being dismissed...well need i dare say it..going under ..Vibe Magazine which is the all time fav for urban news music and fashion! In addition to KING Magazine going under which I have had the pleasure of building a relationship with from pitching my client rapper Trina several cover stories! I cant help but wonder why is this happening to the declining rate of urban print publications.....not only were these timeless publications our markets gateway to current events and colorful images..VIBE Magazine was everything to a urban music publicist to score a client that cover was "once upon a time" GOLD!!!
I knew something just wasent right when I would phone in vibe to pitch clients or better yet extend an invitation to an event i was working that I JUST know they would usually like to cover! But never in my worst nightmare would i imagine they would be the latest target to the media recession
Vibe enjoyed significant success in the late '90s and early part of this decade as hip hop and R&B became the nation's predominant forms of pop music. But in recent years the title has fallen on hard times under its new owner, the Wicks Group, which bought it in 2006. In February, it reduced its circulation and publishing frequency, cut salaries and moved employees to a four-day workweek to save money.
Anywho it would be cool, to not give a fitting goodbye to VIBE or KING so RIP!!!
Dont let your publicist tell you LOOKS dont matter ..they do..people
Do looks matter in publicity? Absolutely they do. The American public and the media are visually oriented. If you think only models have to look hot, you are in for a big surprise. Stars need to look like stars. Fitness experts better look fit. Music artists better have plenty of sex appeal along with great talent. Money gurus better look successful, etc. When doing your web site photos, author bio photos or any promotional material -- be sure to look the part. Usually, this requires some expert guidance from an experienced national publicist, makeover artist and a top photographer. Don't make the mistake of just doing generic head shots. They won't take you where you want to go. In fact, it is often the photo that first gets the attention of media decision makers. It has to communicate the right image, and intrigue the producer or editor in a split second. Underestimating the power and importance of your look can cost you valuable media opportunities. Spend the time and money to get it right. Are you ready for your close-up?
Publicist Advise ( Five Quick Tips)
1. Always BE Very Nice and Professional to all your media outlets
2. Never rush a priority Media Outlet off the phone
3. Never Leave your media thirty on the red carpet
4. NEVER NEVER Get caught in a lie
5. Always keep client pitches to a minimum when talking to the press dont want to overwhelm them

DONT PUT YOUR LIFE IN "Layaway"

SO I was up at the coffee shop across the street from my condo doing my usual Tuesday thing! Which consist of media monitoring, conference calls, emails, emails and more emails...and scheduling client interviews..when I realized...I should add a additional hour of work to my schedule everyday to assist me with getting where I need to be by 25! I decided to share with you all the term " DONT PUT YOUR LIFE ON LAYAWAY" which means toying around, with your life on a daily bases..telling your self were you are going to be within months or years..or how great these ideas are in your head..the world and everyone in it is at our disposal..USE THEM! DONT WAKE UP 1o years from now, saying the traditional shoulda, coulda , woulda...when ur life is basically over in a a nut shell...try very hard to do everything in your power to d what you love, and aspire to BE!
Cuz Layaway is so PLAYED Out and usually when you get the items out,.they are out of season or just not as cute as you thought they were!! lol
PS
Youre only as COOL as you BELIEVE YOu Are

PUBLICIST SPOTLIGHT "YVETTE NOEL-SCHURE: Tales of a Super-Publicist"

A former editor for 'Black Beat' magazine, she has worked at the Sony record label for close to 15 years. From forgotten artists such as Puff Johnson and Kenny Lattimore to superstars like Mariah Carey and Ricky Martin, the Grenada native help engineer effective media strategies throughout the years. Her piece de resistance, though, was building a media profile for a then-unkown Destiny's Child -- the young, burgeoning quartet from Houston and helping them become international superstars.
Since then, Noel-Schure's tailor-made stamp is evident on proven artists such as John Legend and Kelly Rowland.

So this weekend, myself and some co workers and the twins from Jagged Edge (which are currently signed to Slip n Slide Records) attended the Ed Hardy fashion show! It was fab! Although it was only there swim suit line, it was totally MIAMI appropriate with the bright colors and bangin beach bodies! After the show, we went back stage and everyone did some press and did your usual "networking" and then I ate dinner at one of the cutest places in the world!! I Had sushi and sake! On top of the "complimentary French Martini's they had at the show! After dinner I met back up with the twins and we all rode over to the after party! ALL in ALL it was a great Sat night! Just what I needed cocktails, good food and laughs !! after seeing the pr staff for the show, I am so intrigued on doing pr for a fashion event in the very near future!
I also had the great Pleasure to hear some tracks off the new JAgged Edge album !! DOPE!!!

BET Awards 2009 ..............I;m going going back back to cali cali

I know I am late, but this year I accompanied one of my personal fav clients to the BET Awards, i loved the hotel...it was fab! And made wonderful cocktails which I indulged in a few nights...When i first arrived in LA I stayed at Slip N Slide's new recording artist Drew Sidora's house you all may know her as the character on CW's very popular show the game! She has also played in various tv shows as well! Anywho...I actually enjoyed the awards this year, although myself and my client arrived a tad bit late....( side eye) we still enjoyed ourselves and took full advantage of the backstage media room! Trina looked wonderful, bare makeup, bare hair and a wonderful dress...she truly looked like a gem!!
We did however sneak on the red carpet at the very end , behind kanye so she could take a few good photo opp's on the carpet itself!
I actually enjoy the red carpet at these events, i take these opportunities to see who's representing who??Who fired there publicist as of last year and who hired new material...lol..
The red carpet at these awards are extremely extensive and hold a media line up of at least 100 outlets....finding the "priority"press for your client can be a little overwhelming at the awards ..but somehow "use" publicist make it work!

WHEN I GROW UP ...I WANT TO BE A PUBLICIST

From pillow to post, from bounced checks to ...disappearing clients...the world of a publicist especially a freelance one, can be quit dark at times, and create a very disturbing headache or two...or three,....or a thousand...however i love my career and would not change it for the world...although no one in my day and time ever said " I want to grow up to be a publicist" we all know this job title has is great moments, like the gifts, those thank you emails...the look of admiration and appreciate on a clients face when you have secured that "GREAT LOOK"!
ME TIME "QUOTE OF THE WEEK'
Later that day I got to thinking about relationships. There are those that open you up to something new and exotic, those that are old and familiar, those that bring up lots of questions, those that bring you somewhere unexpected, those that bring you far from where you started, and those that bring you back. But the most exciting, challenging and significant relationship of all is the one you have with yourself. And if you find someone to love the you you love, well, that's just fabulous.

I had the pleasure of recently working in New Jersey with a new luxury watch company called Azad Watches! I developed there media packaging for the "signature pieces" and did the PR for there "soft" launch party in the Jersey market for there brand! The watches are to say the least "crazzy" they come in dfferent sizes, shapes, different color diamonds and all! One of the owners Eddie, is a great friend and I am going to support this brand until my dying day! These fab time pieces can be found at http://www.azadwatch.com/
Needless to say a ton of celeb's are sporting these watches all over including, 50 cent, lloyd, Akon, Rick Ross to name a few!
Oh did I mention when I first met Eddie in Miami at my client's Trina's Album Release Party, he presented both Trina and I , with Diamond custom made watches...now how cool is he!!!!
Azad is going places...can you say big things..poppin!!!
KELLY CUTRONE IS HOTTER THAN FISH GREASE

Fashion publicist extraordinaire Kelly Cutrone, has been making noise among the entertainment & fashion community since I was sipping beverages through a bottle, and finding compassion in a pacifier! She is to say the least one of my idols, her sassy attitude and unapologetic personality is only one of her great qualities! She is fearless to the point of no return! I have always liked to compare her to one of my favorite mentors who I had the pleasure of interning under which is none other than one of the “backbones to Island Def Jams executive hierarchy Jana Fleishman.Anyway Kelly is awesome in every sense of the word, and I would love to work with her on ANY project in the near future! For those of you few “IDOTS” that are not aware of Kelly Cutrone or just happen to stumble across her by watching reality show MTV’s The Hills than allow me to educate you with one of her most recent interviews! Also please be on the lookout for her new book! “It’s a real girl’s guide to the real fucking world,” Ms. Cutrone said. “Sex and the City was a lot of frosting. I like Candace, and I think she’s a good writer, but this isn’t four girls holding hands running around New York. It’s the real thing.”
WHO, WHEN & HOW I GOT HERE
Hello there..... my name is Krystle Coleman and I am a " Detroiter" at heart, went to college in Miami, moved to Atlanta for two years only to return back to my second homeland Miami, to further persue my career as a entertainment publicist!
I am currently 23, and my truest to form national holiday is "November 2,1985! Thats right the month of autom leaves, and a slew of good food and FAKE/JEALOUS family members on one given day and a few days after free candy is distributed around the world if you say three little words...Trick or Treat.
I consider myself to be intertwinned with all great things and anything moving in the up direction! I am graduate of Florida Memorial University with a BA in Public Relations and Minor in Journalism. I graduated with honors ( shameless plug) and I like to think I got an early start in life, due to the fact I have been interning since I was 18! From Urban Magazines to writing my own music reviews and interviewing some of todays and yesterdays brightest stars! Following my path in journalism was a my only dream...not to mention the only craft and skill i acquired in my lifetime......HOWEVER !! my life made a sudden change my sohmore year of college, i had the pleasure to do summer internship with one of the most "delicious" publicist in the GAME! Jana Fleishman , better known as the master mind behind Jay -Z, Method Man, RHianna, Luda, and so many more! She is hotter than fish grease! ( I OWE MY LIFE TO HER, weither she knows it or not!!
Anyway, during that internship, I learned so many valuable, essential things in the game of what we know as ( Publicity) although my daily task included answering phones, copying media clips for artist Press Kits, picking up and dropping off important envelopes..at magazine editorial offices...and staring at the wall in the copy machine room, which had become my second home...I truely learned the essence of a publicist, what a LOT of people dont understand is that to be a publicist you have to have a certain type of "personality" it cant be cultivated it cant be copied, only birthed and savored by all!
Although the publicist at Def Jam Said the bare minimum to the ( meek, funny looking interns) during that summer, I studied everone, who's office was on the publicity floor!!!
I studied them from what they wore, to the salads they picked over for lunch while on "conference calls" They all had this "thing" about them a presence that only belongs in a cirlce of its own!
They took , short breaks if any, lived for coffee, and scanned 100 page magazines in less than 10 seconds to find clips of there clients!! but most imporatantly they had fight in them everyday , the FIGHT TO represent someone and get them major magazine or tv looks...the deliverence that only someone gifted could be graces with! after nine weeks of stalking everyone in the pr department, I left NY, with not only an addiction for arguing down editors to get my clients placed..somewhere anywhere...but with " a knowing in my heart, that although all i ever knew was writing and delaying my feelings on paper...I knew that a JUST a journalist would do me no GOOD...it was that fab world of PUBLIC RELATIONS I had to have, needless to say I immediately chaned my major when I returned to school the next semester, and became a walking spoonge to everything that even looked like a media advisory or press release!
I no longer wanted to be the journalist that wrote those articles, I wanted to be the individual setting those interviews up...writing those awsome pitch letters...and lastly i wanted to be the person on the other end letting everyone know what they can and CANT SAY!!
Some people in life are good at fashion, law, medicine, hair....but me ...all i know is pr and thats all i care to know...i speak about public relations with passion and drive...i ofcourse dont know everything by far,....but i do know i am willing to know it all before...i lay to rest! Thats all i need in life is GOD, family, Sarah Jessica Parker and PR!
FAST FORWARD FAST FORWARD
Changed my major...started interning at Miami's own Label powerhouse Slip n Slide Records! this label opened so many doors for me and I love it so much for that!
In less than 5 years, I have overseen publicity for various superstar acts including, Trina, Rick Ross, Plies, Cassidy, Thomas Jones (NFL ) , Justin Miller ( NFL) Trick Daddy. I am a contributing publicist to various sports figures and their lifestyle brands and record labels including Carmelo Anthony’s Krossover Entertainment and Byrant Mckinnie’s “Swagga Entertainment"!
